The former Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan is now a free agent following his one-year deal at Legon Cities Football Club came to an end. The club has terminated the contract following a series of poor performances from the former Sunderland star.
Gyan who will turn 36 on November 22nd, was signed by his new club the Royals to play in 2020/2021. Although his signing created a lot of attention at his club, Gyan was unable to make an impression on the field – there was no goal scored and none of his assists in six appearances with concerns over the fitness of his team and how motivated he was.
Communication Director for Legon Cities FC, Mr. Kwame Dwomoh Agyemang, said that Asamoah Gyan’s departure signifies a shift in course for the team under the new Legon Cities manager Maxwell Konadu.
Mr. Agyemang told Graphic Sports in an interview;
We had a one-year deal with the player and the one year has since elapsed The two parties have decided to go their separate ways, so the deal was not renewed. After the contract was reviewed, the club and the new manager wanted to go in a certain direction and as a club, we believe that should support the coach.
Asamoah Gyan isn’t the only player with a high profile who quit the club in the clearing-out period of the offseason. Former goalkeeper Fatau Dauda, as well as former Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s youth star Matthew Anim Cudjoe also joined the departure train.
Gyan is the all-time leading goalscorer of the Ghana national team, with 51 goals. He represented Ghana at 2006, 2010, and 2014 FIFA World Cups. With 6 goals, he is the top African goalscorer in the history of the World Cup.
Gyan has also represented Ghana at the 2004 Summer Olympics and in seven Africa Cup of Nations in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019, helping them finish in third place in 2008 and runner-up in 2010 and 2015.
